About Us...
HITS THEATRE was founded by Executive Director Carolyn Franklin in June 1980. Incorporated under the name HOUSTON UPSTAIRS THEATRE SCHOOL as a non-profit organization under IRS code 501 (c) (3), HITS is a theatre training facility for children ages 6-22. When, in 1984, the school moved into its own theatre in the Houston Heights, it ceased being “UPSTAIRS” and became “HITS”! HITS has two major goals for children in the arts: EDUCATION and PERFORMANCE.
Today, HITS is one of the leading performing arts education organizations for young people in the metropolitan Houston area and is dedicated to providing school age students the highest quality performing arts education with a focus on training in the musical theater disciplines of voice, dance and acting. In addition, HITS' several community outreach programs provide arts education opportunities for underserved populations. For over twenty five (25) years, HITS unique performance-based programs have served students at all skill levels. HITS programs currently serve over 500 students annually and include:
- Performing and theater arts courses for children and young adults including voice, dance, acting and related theater arts.
- HITS Theatre Company Traveling
Show which performs short
revues outside the theatre, for charitable,
business and civic events.
- Outreach programs/partnerships with school, community and social service organizations.
- A multi-session Musical Theater Summer Camp.
- Needs-based scholarship and financial aid for all programs.
- An annual major Broadway production at Houston's Miller Outdoor Theatre.
